The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), has apprehended and fines over 40 defaulters who err to comply with sanitation rules.
The defaulters were fine by the Magistrate when PEPSA intensified the monthly routine sanitation exercise for the month of September.
Our correspondent who monitor the sanitation exercise within Jos and Bukuru metropolis saw the enforcement team of PEPSA staff alongside sister agencies and security agents are in hand to enhance sanity environment.
It was also learned that there was low compliance as a result of gross misconduct of some pedestrians.
Pundits advocate for total overhaul of the security by the agency to ensure effective enforcement and compliance of the sanitation exercise.
Director of administration PEPSA, Mrs Antonia Shalwul, confirmed the compliance was impressive compared to last month of August, saying that the agency went out for massive sensitization which gave them a good result.
"While some of the challenges we got on the field are those pedestrians because most of them were the one on the main road. So were able to fine them which they paid. Were believing that by next sanitation of the month of October we will improve, were going to look into areas where there is zero compliance.
"We have a committee that was constituted for the markets, so by next sanitation were going to test run that at Kugiya market in Bukuru so that we would see the level of compliance. So by next sanitation we will begin with market which will start by Thursday, Friday will be office sanitation then on Saturday is actual sanitation.
"Were looking towards upscaling the penalty because some defaulters are taking it for granted. Somebody because you fine him N500 he will even decide to carry N500 and put it in his pocket and by the time you stop him he just removed the N500 and give you No! This time were going to use them to work on the field in where ever we meet them to do the sanitation there and they pay fine", Shalwul revealed.
She also said already they had a meeting with all the security agencies and agreed to be in the same page always in the course of enforcement of the monthly exercise.
