Following the rising cases of rape in Nigeria, the wife of the Management Committee Chairman of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Council, Mrs Ruth Mandyau has launched a campaign against the menace.

Mrs Mandyau who spoke emotionally in a meeting with women leaders and wives of Management Committee Councilors of  Barkin-Ladi Local Government in her home, as part of activities marking the 2020 democracy day celebration said, the rate at which instances of rape and child abuse were on the rise had become worrisome and called on the women to take action that will help tackle the menace.

“I must say that the rising cases of rape in Nigeria are most worrisome. This is such a barbaric act that should be condemned from all fronts because the psychological implications are far-reaching and terribly devastating on the victims and we the mothers are at the receiving end.

She cautioned the women to be wary of the current concerns and desist from the act of giving out their children to strangers in the name of house helps. Mrs Mandyau narreted the story of a girl who said she became a victim of rape at 5years, while she could not bear the trauma, becoming a commercial sex worker at age eleven (11) became her only option.

Mrs Mandyau advocated massive awareness campaign against the trend and assured the women that, as a mother, she will work tirelessly to ensure an end to the incidences of rape in Barkin-Ladi. She further stressed that, to curb the spate of rape, "we must depart from the usual practice of treating cases of abuse with silence" noting that, legal practitioners have rised in defense of the victims.

“In the same vein, the wife of the Management Committee Chairman gave an update on the proactive measures taken by government against the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus (COVID-19), pandemic. Some of these include; the use of face mask, discouraging mass gatherings, observing social distance, regular handwash, use of sanitizers among other safety protocols. Mrs Ruth Mandyau presented palliatives to the women, saying that, the gesture was part of her commitment to help cushion the hardship experienced during the lockdown.

Responding on behalf of the women, the APC LGA woman leader thanked  Mrs Mandyau for the kind gesture, and promise that they are going to stepdown the Sensitization against the trend of rape in their various wards, while praying that God should continue to grant her wisdom as she pilots the affairs of women in Barkin-Ladi.

In another development, Mrs Mandyau paid homage to a woman who delivered at Heipang isolation center in Heipang town of Barkin-Ladi LGA. The wife of the Management Committee Chairman, commended the nursing mother for her show of patriotism by accepting to be isolated even at a time she was nearing her expected date of delivery (EDD). She however, presented gifts on behalf of Barkin-Ladi Local Government and prayed God to protect both the baby and her parents.

The nursing mother, Mrs Salome appreciated the Chairman's wife for the visit, saying she was overwhelmed.
