Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPPA), office of the Governor of Plateau State, Dr. Gyang Bere revealed that his principal, Governor Caleb Mutfwang is committed to uplifting the youths of the state towards meaningful ventures.
Bere, said the governor is passionate about harnessing and nurturing young talents to explore their potentials for greater productivity rather than indulging in social vices.
He gave the assurance during the grand finale of Vwang District peace and unity football tournament, held Saturday in Vwang Central football field in Jos South LGA, Plateau State.
The peace tournament sponsored by Dr.Gyang Bere, kick started since 24th December, 2024.
A second half strike from Emmanuel Choji of Wunato FC is enough to sealed a victory for the champions (Wunato FC) in the final encounter against their edge rivals Chugwi United.
DOPPA acknowledged the essence of the unity tournament is to bring the people of Vwang, particularly the young people under one banner to channel their energy toward productive ventures, as Mutfwang's administration is working assiduously to promote grassroots sports, and " this tournament aligned with such vision.
"Our goal is to foster peace, unity, and, most importantly, showcase the talent we have here in Vwang District. Several football coaches, NFL scouts, and other organizations are here watching the players. At the end of the day, I will be very satisfied if some of the talented players identified here are selected to play for teams outside this community, Plateau State, and even Nigeria. That would mean the essence of organizing this tournament has been achieved.
"I have said it time and again—this is not a competition. We are one community, and we are working together to harmonize our efforts and promote ourselves, our community, and Plateau State. This tournament is not a one-time event. We are hoping and praying for the wisdom and resources to sustain it", he said.
He further admitted the Governor has made significant efforts in revamping sports, keyed into massive renovation of Rwang Pam Township Stadium. Similarly, the abandoned Zaria Road Stadium is being considered for investment and completion. The goal is to promote sports within the state.
"Beyond sports, the government is also fighting against drug abuse. Events like this keep young people engaged in productive activities, diverting them from drugs and other social vices. Sports are a powerful unifying factor, and we will continue to use them to guide the youth toward meaningful ventures.
"The governor has also worked to bring Plateau youth together under one umbrella. The planned renovation of Joseph Gomwalk House into an ICT hub this year is part of that effort. This initiative aims to connect young people to global opportunities, allowing them to work remotely from Jos while earning income from international organizations."
Meanwhile, chairman, Plateau State Football Association (PFA), Suleiman Kwande, confirmed they were able to pencil 8 exceptional players in the course of the football tournament, which according to him "by the grace of God we will explore those players to a greater future attainment."
