Plateau State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to partner with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and the Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major General Folunsho Oyinlola to find a lasting solution to the persistent attacks and killings of innocent citizens in various parts of the state.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, made the position of the Lagislature known during a visit to the Headquarters of the 3 Armoured Division, Rukuba Barracks, alongside members of the 10th Assembly.
The visit followed a resolution of the House during plenary on Wednesday, 16th July, after a motion of urgent public importance was moved by Hon. Dachung Danyam Musa, member representing Riyom Constituency, in response to the recent attacks in Bindi and Tahoss communities of his Constituency
Speaking during the visit, the Speaker explained that the purpose was to engage directly with the military leadership, hear their perspectives, and jointly strategize towards ending the senseless killings and restoration of peace to the affected communities.
He commended the gallant efforts of the Nigerian military in combating insecurity across the state, assuring that the 10th Assembly is committed to supporting security agencies through legislative backing and advocacy to restore hope and confidence in Plateau citizens.
The Speaker also revealed that the House has constituted a standing committee to work closely with Operation Safe Haven and other critical stakeholders, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.
“Our desire as a House is to restore trust and confidence in our people. We must collaborate across all sectors to ensure the safety of lives and property in our state,” he said.
In his response, the GOC and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, Major General Folunsho Oyinlola appreciated the Speaker and members of the Assembly for the visit.
He reiterated the neutrality of the military in handling security challenges and assured them of the continues commitment of his men to maintaining peace.
Narrating the ordeal of his troops during the Bindi and Tahoss attacks, the GOC explained that while his men were engaging armed assailants on one front, additional attackers emerged from another direction, complicating the operation.
Despite the challenges, he affirmed their dedication to the people-centered approach of Operation Safe Haven.
The GOC further urged the House to deepen engagement with community leaders, youth groups, and development organizations. He advocated for the empowerment and mobilization of local vigilante groups as part of grassroots security efforts to prevent future attacks.
“The Armed Forces belong to you. We are Nigerians, funded by taxpayers’ money, and we are committed to your safety. But remember, we are also human. We need your cooperation and understanding,” he added.
