The Plateau United Football Club of Jos, has trained security personnel, stewards and supporters' club on safety and security measures to enhance professionalism during home matches as the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) 2026/2027 season progress.
The Team Manager of Plateau United FC, Myepobai Bulus Gai, acknowledged the training aimed to keep the security personnel, most especially the supporters’ club, on how to match their running to avoid any breach of security.
"It’s important that we train our supporters’ club security personnel so that we can collaborate with the security department of the NPFL.
"This training is train the trainers. So we're training them so that they can go and train others in order to have a yearly training.
"We supposed to have this training before the season commenced but because of one reason or the other we couldn't do it, but I think is better late than never and that is why we're doing it now", The team manager explained.
The head of protocol, safety and security of the NPFL, Henry Chijoke who doubled as a resource person of the training
said the exercise is quite important because "we want to be proactive as the FIFA regulation on safety and security states that proactiveness is far better than reactiveness.
"If you prevent it from happening then you're good but if you allow it to happen really you cannot Measure the extent of damage you may run into", Chijoke stated.
He further explained that, now, "for match Day security even CAF in it's regulation states that, at least minus two days before high profile game or any match there must be a security meeting.
"Unfortunately a lot of premier League clubs don't do that. And we're trying to see how we can bring that to bear because if you don't plan your planning to fail. The security meeting that comes up must have all the heads of security, heads of stewards, heads of road safety, and even the head of stadium security.
"They put their heads together and identify potential hazards, that is the kind of risk assessment. And then, on the match Day proper, they go all out to ensure that the venue of the match is a family friendly venue for any premier League game", he pointed out.
Chijoke also revealed that initially, the regulation stated that before any game usually the stadium remain closed to fans. The security personnel may arrived at least minus three hours before the match time because both the home team, away team, and match officials must arrive into the arms of the security men at the stadium.
"That is why the stadium must remain locked up, when the security men come up probably three hours before the match, and they have the briefing and deployment, they throw the gate open, and that is the only way they can have control of who comes in with dangerous substance or strange object."
Participant, Gyang Peter, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Plateau United Supporters' Club described the training as timely insightful, saying that "this is the first time we're having such engagement.
While appreciating management of Plateau United for the initiative, Peter promised to step down knowledge gained to other members of the supporters' towards achieving maximum security.
Also speaking, Rengman Ayuba the personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Plateau State Command admitted that the training was an eye opener towards upscaling their responsibility.
