Following the growing insecurity leading to incessant attacks and killings of some students of University of Jos, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau state Council has called on the Government to convert "Race Course" known as Fillin-Sukuwa on Bauchi Ring Road to mobile police Barrack to protect Staff and students of the University.
NUJ also suggest that, it is pertinent for the Government to regulate the activities of tricycles operators in Jos by reducing the number to 500 with specific registration numbers and designate route of operations.
This was contained in a press release signed by the Plateau state Council chairman of NUJ Paul Jatau and Secretary Peter Amine on Friday in Jos the state capital.
According to the statement "the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council has express serious concern over the frequent attacks on students and staff of University of Jos in the challenging security situation bedeviling the state.
"The union notes with dismay that the University community has become a target for miscreants that do not value human lives and peace killing many innocent and harmless students.
"The NUJ therefore calls on security agencies to devise more strategies to protect the University community and indeed other residents of Jos.
"The NUJ wants the state government to make concerted efforts to stem the rising cases of violent conflict to include;
" The Race Course also known as Fillin-Sukuwa on Bauchi Ring Road be converted to a Mobile Police Barracks to protect staff and students on the two campuses of the University.
"Government should, as a matter of urgency, regulate the activities of tricycle operators in Jos and reduce the number of tricycles to 500 with specific registration numbers and designated routes of operation.
"Modalities should be made to compel those who encroached on the University of Jos land be compelled to vacate.
"Operation Rainbow should build and equip a Security Outpost close to the university like the one being operated at Dutse Uku, in Jos North Local Government", NUJ noted.
However, NUJ calls on students and staff of the University to be security conscious and provide useful security information to security agencies in the state for prompt action.
