In commemoration of the 2021 World Youth Day, the Plateau State Government, in partnership with the Centre for the Advocacy of Justice and Rights(CAJR) Jos with support from USAID/OTI/NERI has mobilised 70 youths from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state to be sensitized on the need for dependence on agriculture for survival.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Victor Lapang disclosed this on Wednesday in Jos.
According to the Honourable Commissioner, this year's theme of world International Youth day 2021 is, "Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health", with the aim of highlighting that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.
He said that "it has been acknowledged that there is a need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life, while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems".
While addressing journalists on the “World Youth Day”, celebration, the Commissioner pointed out that agriculture can be a source of income and livelihood, hence, the state government is committed to sensitising the youths to adopt agriculture as a means of livelihood.
He hinted that the Ministry is organising a symposium for the youths in the state in partnership with the Centre for the Advocacy of Justice and Rights(CAJR) Jos with support from USAID which focuses on making agriculture a source for income and livelihoods.
“In line with the theme highlights for this year celebration, there is a need to drive efforts to make and encourage Plateau youths to adopt and own agriculture as means of livelihood and be more relevant, equitable and inclusive for all youth, including new and sustainable innovations.
