The Senator representing Plateau North at the National Assembly, Sen. Istifanus Gyang, has called on corporate bodies and spirited individuals to help in tackling rising poverty bedeviling his constituents and Nigerians as a whole.


Sen. Gyang made the call Monday in Jos, Plateau state at the training of 400 youths from his constituency on solar energy, as a means of empowering them to acquire skills to became self-reliant.



The lawmaker decried the increasing rate of poverty in Nigeria; noting that if poverty is not tackled, it could degenerate into evil acts.

Sen. Gyang who is worried that youths are more vulnerable to be negatively affected with the rising poverty level; appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to assist the less privileged, stating that government alone can’t eradicate poverty among citizens in the country.


“There are no more space for civil service jobs, I advice youth to learn a trade, be skillful.



“Let our youths in Plateau state learn from their counterparts from the South East, and South West who are skilled in trade,” he stated.


Speaking on the need to be self reliant, he charged youths of his constituency to be creative and embrace meaningful activities, noting that it will prevent them from crime.


“This training is aimed at ensuring that you people (youth) are trained in solar energy so that you can be engaged in maintaining the numerous solar power systems we have installed in various locations,” he said.



Sen. Gyang said the mandate given him by the electorate shall be accomplished with positive impact as he has empowered over 2000 constituents within the last two months, cutting across, widows, youths and students.


The solar energy training is being carried out by National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development Energy Commission of Nigeria, from the University of Ilorin.
