Members of the Kabong Community on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over low quality work of the ongoing Tudun Wada Sabon Gari road project in Jos North local government area of Plateau State.
Members of the community who came out in their numbers expressed disappointment over what they called poorly executed job by Joelex construction (the company that has been awarded the job).
Addressing journalists (after going through the road project), Hon. Yakubu Choji, a community leader and former member Plateau State House of Assembly Jos North/West in the 6th and 7th Assembly stated that the protest became necessary in order not to dent the image of Governor Caleb Mutfwang who is known for quality taking into cognizance the execution of similar projects in other places of Jos and Bukuru metropolis.
"We are all happy that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has decided to complete this road project. However, our concerned is that the road must meet the standard expected of road construction and in line with the quality of job carried out by this administration both in other places of Jos North and Bukuru metropolis.
"Our action today is in line with the requirement of democracy because we are the beneficiary of this project.
"It is also on record the Zaramaganda community in Jos South protested in rejection of a construction work by a contractor and the contractor heeded to the call of the community and made adjustment and ensured delivery of quality job.
"It is a similar thing we are doing here. Governor Mutfwang is doing his best to ensure the delivery of quality services in infrastructure and what of you. Therefore, the contractor must also ensure that they deliver quality service in line with the policy of the Mutfwang administration.
"No body is blackmailing this administration because we are all part of it. We have supported Mutfwang through out his campaign and we are still in support of his administration. He meant well for Plateau State both in words and in action.
"But what we are saying is that this contractor must execute quality work because it has to do with tax payers money and if the contractor fails to deliver quality work, it would surely dent the image of the Mutfwang administration.
In his submission on behalf of the contractor, the site engineer, Engr. Dung Nyam stated that the work was been carried out according to specifications.
"Those protesting are do not know what's going on. There is nothing we do here without the approval of the Resident Engineer who is always on site.
"The resident engineer is not a novist that he will allow us to lay this asphalt to this magnitude without him complaining. Our intention is to give the community the best.
"I am assuring you and the government that if this road should collapse in the next five years, we should be hold responsible. The Resident Engineer who is the governor's eyes here cannot allow us lay asphalt to this magnitude without him complaining", Engineer Nyam said.
However, there was a twist of event when the Commissioner of Lands and Survey, Barr. Peter Gar appeared on the scene and insisted to be interviewed. When journalists politely explained to him why he would not be interviewed, more so that his ministry was not the one that awarded the job to the contractor, he flayed up and made uncomplimentary remarks against the journalists.
The Commissioner further alleged that the journalists were paid to portray the administration of Gov Mutfwang in bad light and went further to described Hon. Yakubu Choji as rif-raff.
"Even if you don't interview me, I have my own journalists and I will bring them here to do the report that would favour me", the Commissioner said.
