The Vice Chancellor, University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has confirmed that from the year 2021 to date no fewer than 97 academic staff of the institution were promoted to the rank of professorship.
The VC said over 345 academic staff benefited from various training initiatives initiated by the school management between July this year 2024 to date.
"About 120 were trained, 2 enjoyed overseas training. Over 100 None academic staff benefited training within the period under review."
Professor Ishaya made this known Thursday at the Senate chamber, permanent site campus, university of Jos, during a press conference marking his 3rd year anniversary as the 10th substantive vice chancellor of the institution.
The VC who assumed mantle of leadership 1st December, 2021, vowed a conducive academic environment, hinge on accountability, equity, and transparency in tandem with the University Act and status.
"We are truly committed towards actualizing our mandates, prioritizing staff and students welfare.
"We have continued to focus on quality assurance to maintain and improve on our desired academic standards: We currently have 70 out of 75 of our programmes with National Universities Commission (NUC) full accreditation status. This is about 93.3% of the programmes that we run in contrast to 57.3% before we assumed office in December 2021.

We have created two (2) additional faculties and over twenty (20) new academic programmes that are contemporary and currently awaiting NUC resource verification exercise
Research - A consortium of Nigerian Universities and Inter-University Centres collaborated with the University of Jos to develop a DNA-based indigenous COVID-19 vaccine Candidate code named SJN3T CorVac (Sokoto, Jos, NARICT, NIMR, NVRI and TetFund), funded by TETFund.
"Development of an Anti-Tick Vaccine The University won 9 TETFUND NRF awards out of 32 concept notes submitted in the 2023 NRF grant cycle (9 out 185 TETFUND NRF awards to all Nigerian Universities in 2024)."
The VC, further revealed the Department of Theatre and Film Arts won a grant titled- Wake the flies. Humanitarian crisis in Plateau state, Nigeria, from Hessen Film and Medien, Frankfurt in February 2024.
"The grant is a production funding for young talents. The value of the grant is 25,000€
The University got a funding in July 2024, from the National Communications Commission (NCC), Abuja for research on: Smartware Technology Based Security and Privacy Awareness Solution for Mobile Device Users."
He also reiterates that preparation is on advance stage to ensure successful hosting of the 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in 2025.
Highlighting COVID-19, industrial action, paucity of funds, insecurity, land encroachment among others as some of the factors responsible for the low pace of the institution, Professor appreciates Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and other development partners for their unwavering support and intervention.
