A non governmental organization, called the Jemilius Aid and Relief Initiative (JAREI), in partnership with LikeMinds Community Development Initiative (LCDI), said to have recorded 30 cases of gender based violence (GBV) within Angwan- Rukuba community in Jos North local government area of Plateau State.

Beyond advocating punitive measures for perpetrators, the NGOs revealed they had established structures to address GBV cases by conducting psychosocial support (PSS) therapy sessions for survivors to help in reduce trauma.

Program and campaign coordinator for GBV advocacy, JAREI as well as LikeMinds Community Development Initiative, Rejoice Kuchel Daniel, made this known in a quest to sustain advocacy in tandem with global 16-days GBV activism:25th November to 10 December, 2024, focusing on the theme" unite to end violence against Women and girls."

On why the choice of Angwan-Rukuba as target area for the advocacy campaign, according to her, they carefully selected this community because it predominantly consists of women and girls, particularly market women.

"These women, due to their circumstances, are likely facing significant challenges, including gender-based violence, but may lack a platform to voice their experiences. By coming here, we aim to provide a safe space where they can speak up and share their stories without fear.

"We aim to create awareness and provide solutions by standing as a bridge between survivors of gender-based violence and the appropriate authorities. We are here to ensure that reported cases are taken seriously and that the perpetrators face justice.

"We’ve established structures to address the issues comprehensively. This includes conducting psychosocial support (PSS) therapy sessions for survivors to help reduce trauma.

"Additionally, we’ve initiated relief efforts and advocacy programs to ensure survivors receive the support they need. We also work to bridge the gap between survivors and authorities to ensure perpetrators are held accountable according to the law.
"Approximately 20 to 30 cases of gender-based violence have been reported within this community.

"We are actively working to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. We collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure cases are prosecuted. At the same time, we focus on the well-being of survivors by offering therapy sessions and relief materials to support them through their healing process", she added.
