A Coalition of Plateau ethnic nationalities, The Peace Ambassadors, has frowned at the bizarre foisting of the Mwaghavul ethnic flag with an inset of the map of Mangu LGA at the PRTV roundabout, in the Rayfield area of Jos South LGA.
In a Statement signed by Dung Joseph Pam and Azi Ajiji Musa, Chairman and secretary of the coalition, respectively, the group calls for the immediate removal of the flag and ensure the arrest and prosecution of the persons perpetrators. Such action, the group contend, is susceptible to causing ethnic unrest and distrust amongst the fifty-four tribes in the state.
"The place where the flag is foisted is neither a Mwaghavul enclave nor a private property, hence foisting the Mwaghavul flag at such a conspicuous position at the state's seat of power is a manifest pointer of the ulterior motive of portraying Plateau State as a conquered Mwaghavul territory, just because a Mwaghavul man happens to occupy the number one seat of the state", the statement quoted.
The group further asserts that, some Plateau tribes had occupied the coveted seat of the governor of Plateau State before, but none of Mutfwang's predecessors, not even Baba Jang who hails from the Berom ethnic blog, as the sole owners of the land, made such daring move.
"This effrontery, if allowed to fester, would set a bad precedence and enshrine ethnic politics in the state, thereby making contest for the number one seat a 'they-vs-us' struggle, rather than the choice of a competent leader to steer affairs of the state", the statement further said.
The group, thereby, called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang to launch a manhunt of the perpetrators and ensure they brought to book in order to serve as deterrent to others who might harbour such thought in the future.
The group warns that the act of foisting an ethnic flag in a strategic government property might appear harmless, but its clandestine motive is capable of balkanizing the unity of Plateau people and reduce the struggle for political power in the state to ethnic superiority contest.
