The Social Democratic Party (SDP), Plateau State chapter has charged Federal Government of Nigeria to work out modalities with sincerity of purpose to rescue students and teachers who were in captivity.
SDP made their position known as Nigerians celebrate 2026 Children's Day.
This was contained in a statement signed and to newsmen in Jos on Wednesday by the state publicity secretary of the party, Amb. Tony Young Godswill titled “on Children’s Day, Nigeria Must Hear the Cries of Its Missing Children”.
According to Godswill, SDP Plateau State says Children’s Day should be a day of celebration, but many Nigerian families are living through abduction and insecurity, citing the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren, teachers, and a toddler in Oriire LGA, Oyo State as a painful example.
"Children are growing up believing schools are places of risk instead of hope.Every child has a right to learn safely and return home.
"This is a government obligation, not a privilege. Abduction of children is an assault on Nigeria’s future and collective aspirations", Godswill noted.
The SDP mouthpiece urged Federal Government, state governments, security agencies, community and religious leaders, civil society, and all Nigerians to make child protection a national priority above politics, ethnicity, and religion.
"The Federal Government bears constitutional responsibility for citizen safety. We demand decisive action, stronger security measures, and better intelligence gathering.
"Children’s Day should remind the nation of children still in captivity and parents waiting anxiously. The measure of a nation is how well it protects its children.
“Nigeria’s children deserve books, not bullets. Classrooms, not captivity. A future free from fear", Godswill mentioned.
SDP acknowledged they stand
in solidarity with affected families as they prayed for the safe and immediate return of all abducted children and teachers.
