Re: INTERACTIVE SESSION BETWEEN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE ON FEDERAL CHARACTER COMMISSION VS MANAGEMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF JOS
The National Body of Gamai Youth Movement, the canopy for all Gamai Youth in Nigeria and in the diaspora was grimmed by the viral video in circulation on social media, which was brought to our attention. The video is an interactive session between the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos,Prof. Sebastian Seddi Maimako and the honourable house of Representatives committee on Federal Character Commission.
The Gamai Youth Movement supports, encourages and applauds any action by any group, government and non governmental, geared towards righting the wrongs in our society and seeking to place this country on the path of nation hood and progress.
Against this background, the Gamai Youth Movement, simply refered to herein after as Gamai Youth Movement supports and applauds the house representative committee on Federal Character Commission as she carriers out this onerous but neccesary constitutional duty of oversighting governmental bodies, agencies and parastatals of government etc.
We are with the house committee on this therefore,as she carriers out her function on the university of Jos, respecting the nominal role of the institution. Be that as it may, the Gamai Youth Movement noted certain disturbing trends in the video which caught her attention and deserving of mention, to aid the committee in the discharge of her constitutional dusties, going forward;
1.The interactive session which supposedly was meant for the committee and not even for the plenary session of the house/public hearing, was recorded and posted in the public dormain on social media, though not a public session.
2.In the Video recorded and posted for the consumption of the public, only the session of the committee with the vice chancellor of the University of Jos, to the exclusion of other vice chancellors from other Federal universities.
3. The session gives the impression that the committee came with a mindset for indictment without the need to advert to the natural principle of opportunity to hear the vice Chancellor.
4. The scenario passes more as a mockery and a travesty ochestrated to ridiculed an academic professor of high repute, whose track records, for any one who cares to know, deserved commendation.
5.It is expedient that very important bodies such as the committee of the house of representative in discharging their constitutional functions do so diligently, wholistically and with an open mind but the did the opposite as shown in the viral video in circulation.
Were these attributes to be employed by the house committee on Federal Character, it will be obvious that the University of Jos merits commendation for being Federal Character compliant in her nominal role. The following instances will bear us witness to this position:
The Principal officers of UNIVERSITY OF JOS
1.Chairman of council- Prince Tony Momoh(River state)
2.Vice Chancellor- Prof. Sabastine Seddi Maimako(Plateau state)
3.DVC (Academic)-Prof. Tanko Ishaya (Kebbi state)
4.DVC (Administration)-Prof. Grey Goziem Ejikeme(Abia state)
5.Registrar - Chief Monday M.Danjem (Plateau state)
6.Bursar- Mr Philip Umbugala(Nasarawa state)
7. Librarian- Dr Thomas A. Adigun- (Ogun state)
Where did we get it wrong as people of Plateau state compare to other Universities across the country, with the following few example:
1. FEDERAL UNIVERSITY KATSINA (Dutsinma) the state of The Chairman committee on Federal Character Commission in the house of representative;
1.Vice Chancellor-(Katsina State)
2.DVC -(Kebbi state)
3.Reigistrar- (Katsina state)
4.Librarian-(katsina state)
5.Bursar-(Katsina state)
FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE
The home town of the Deputy Chairman committee. All the principal officers of the University come from south west.
BAYERO UNIVERSITY KANO
1.Vice Chancellor-(Kano state)
2.DVC - (Academic) Kano
3.DVC-(Administration)- Kebbi state.
4.Librarian- Kano state
5.Registrar- Kano state
UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN(IU)
1.Vice Chancellor- Osun state
2.DVC- OYO
3.Registrar-OYO
4.Bursar-OYO
5.Librarian-OYO
Just to mention but few among many.
6.It is very obvious in some of the universities in the north with evidence proves to find some department's and Faculties without single persons from South west, south south, south east and part of north central. It will also interest the house committee members to know that some of this institutions even lecture in their Languages because they are not Federal Character compliants. Religion is busy playing the dominance in academic arena. As a body we fill the committee should take a critical look at this area mentioned before bringing in your baseless argument on a soft spoken and down to earth Vice Chancellor of the University Jos whose name has been change by his admirers across the country from Prof. Sabastine Seddi Maimako to Prof. Sabastine Seddi Maitamako.
7.Why the selective investigation? My answer might not be unconnected to the reclaimed land of the university from the land grabbers.
8. To our over zealous brother Hon.Yusuf Gaddi whom we always admire, to be caution on his utterances on issues that are of Plateau.
9.As a body, we are calling on all our legislators both in the red and green chambers in the national assembly to always stand t safe guard and project ours at all time.
10.We are so proud to say that PLATEAU has bright sons and daughters in academia, Politics, business etc. Unfortunately, when these sons begin to glow, enemies of progress emerge from within and outside to stain and taint their records.
Inconclusion:
As an umbrella body of the Gamai Youth Movement who always speaks out in the face of obvious unfair and unjust treatment of our brother the Vice Chancellor, recognizing that in a developing society such as ours, silence is not golden and will only hold us bound to our painful underdevelopment. Our unflinching support remain solid to the management of University of Jos under the able leadership of an erudite schorlar Prof. Sabastine Seddi Maimako
SOLIDARITY FOREVER PLATEAUNIAN!
