Prof. Sati Fwanshak,  the Dean, Faculty of Arts, University  of Jos, has called on goverment at all levels to fund researches that would promote peaceful coexistence and social cohesion in the society.

Fwanshak made the call in a public Post-Graduate Research Dissemination Lecture on peace, organised by the Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria  (CCFN) on Wednesday in Jos.

The event is part of the ”Zaman Tare” (Live Together) project of the organisation, aimed at promoting lasting peace and social cohesion in communities.

The zaman tare project is being implemented in collaboration with the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development  (CAFOD) and Dialogue, Reconciliation and Peace Centre (DREP), and funded by the European Union.

As part of the zaman tare project, the organisation provided scholarship to some post-graduates students in the university  of Jos and Kaduna State university, to conduct research in the area of peace building.

Fwanshak,  who is the Coordinator  of the programme in university  of Jos, advised goverment to fund researches in crisis ridden areas, with a view of finding lasting solutions to the lingering problem.

The Don, who decried the rising spate of violent conflicts in communities, insisted that if recommendations from well conducted the researches are implemented, would go a long way in addressing our current challenges.

“It is hogh time goverment  begin to show serious commitment in addressing some of the violent conflicts we are experiencing today.

“It should fund researches in conflict prone areas, to find out the causes and possible  solutions that will enable people live together in peace.

“Government can provide scholarships to studnets to conduct an in-depth research that will bring lasting peace and promote living together in the communities,”he said.

Fwanshak  commended CCFN for sponsoring the researches, adding that findings from the study would form part of the body of knowledge in the society.

“It is unfortunate that we have a problem, but we are not doing much toward finding solutions, rather, we are waiting for outsiders to come and solve it for us.

“I want to commend this Catholic organisation for supporting these students to conduct these researches, it is our believe that there findings would go a long way in addressing our problems,”he said.

He explained that the public lecture enables the students present their findings before members of the communities where the researches were conducted.

He added that it would enable members of the communities identify gaps, learned lessons and share experiences that would promote peaceful coexistence in the society.

The event, which began on Tuesday, had 12 students who presented their research findings.
