The Honourable Commissioner ministry of youth and sports development, Plateau State, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, has reaffirms Governor Caleb Mutfwang unwavering commitment towards the development of sports at the grassroot in the state.
Ashoms stated that the government is passionate and determine to create avenue for Youths to showcase their talents for future endeavors.
The youth and sports commissioner made the assertion while speaking to newsmen at Azi Nyako Youth Center Dadin Kowa in Jos on Tuesday, during a volleyball and basketball novelty matches which culminates Governor Mutfwang's 2nd year anniversary in office.
"As part of our celebration, we’ve had football matches, including novelty games. We felt that other sports clubs should also benefit from this atmosphere, which is why we considered the commitment of our volleyball and basketball teams. We wanted to ensure they had the opportunity to showcase their talent", Ashoms revealed.
Underscoring the significance of the novelty matches taking into account the recent conclusion of National Sports Festival, Gateway Ogun State 2025, Ashoms said naturally, if you want to develop grassroots sports, you need regular competitions, novelty matches, and you must encourage training sessions. "That way, by the time we head to Enugu for the 2026 festival, our performance will have improved."
Recalled Plateau got 47 medals in gateway Ogun 2025 finishing 12 position in the table chat a development which the commissioner expressed optimism noting that much is need to be done.
"So, we want to start early. We’ll be focusing on both individual and team sports to ensure a better position on the medal table. For instance, we ranked first in the North, but nationally, we placed 12th out of 36 states. That’s fair, but not good enough.
"The governor is pleased with the progress, but he’ll be even happier when our position improves. To achieve that, we’ll invest in early camping and competitions. We’re heading to Delta for the National U-20 Games, and we’ll be participating in several other events.
"We've received applications from the Volleyball Federation to host matches here in Jos. There’s also the Chief of Defence Staff Competition and many others we plan to host. For competitions outside Jos and even outside Nigeria, we’re committed to exposing our athletes so they can compete at the highest level."
Acknowledging Governor Mutfwang's continues support, Ashoms also said soon,
"Plateau will host a sports awards ceremony to recognize and appreciate those sacrificing time, energy, and resources for sports development. Athletes, veterans, journalists, and other stakeholders will gather in a beautiful, friendly, and sporty environment to network, celebrate, and say thank you."
