Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang has confirmed that the state abattoir market is undergoing a massive upgrade in which according to the governor if completed, the government is proposing slaughtering about 500 cows in a daily basis.
Governor Mutfwang revealed the rationale behind the upgrade of abattoir aimed to meet international standards, aligning with the livestock transformation programme in Wase and Kanam local government areas.
He acknowledged agriculture as a key driver for economic development, and the sector is huge which inform his administration deliberate effort in dividing the sector into two (crops and animals).
The made this known during a media parley on Tuesday at Government House Little Rayfield, Jos.
In a quest to achieve food security, Governor Mutfwang said to have launched a landmark initiative to recover 900 hectares of farmland previously abandoned due to insurgency across Mangu, Riyom, and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas.
"The Agricultural Services and Training Centre (ASTC) was engaged for the land reclamation, and improved seeds were distributed to farmers to kickstart productivity. Over 3,000 displaced households are now back on their feet.
"In 2024 and 2025, the state government procured fertilizer and other farming inputs worth ₦16 billion to support dry-season farming. During the wet season, the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP) introduced coconut and oil palm plantations—ushering in a new era of agroforestry diversification.
"A collaborative intervention with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development facilitated the provision of farming inputs to 500 maize, rice, and wheat farmers. The program emphasized targeted, skill-based support, helping farmers achieve self-reliance and economic resilience", he mentioned.
Governor Mutfwang further opined that his administration recorded a significant milestone both on human capital development and other sector of the economy within two years.
"We have made massive investments in urban infrastructure to enable Plateau to become economically bouyant and self sufficient.
"We also provide transformation and intervention in education, health, transportation, justice system, women, sports and youths development, mining, tourism, culture and hospitality amongst other sectors."
The governor who reaffirmed his commitment for transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in governance, alluded to the fact that though security challenges has not abated as they hope but Plateau is relatively safe compared to other states.
