The Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Her Excellency Ngo Josephine Chundung Piyo, has extended her warm congratulations to Mrs. Dorcas Gwani, following her election as Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council.

The Deputy Governor, in a congratulatory message issued to newsmen in Jos by her Chief Press secretary, Mrs. Martha Nyam, described Mrs. Gwani’s election as a testament to her commitment to the journalism profession, vast experience and the confidence placed in her by her fellow professionals.

She noted that Mrs. Gwani’s emergence as the second woman to lead the Chapel in recent years, and the recent appointment of another woman as the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, is a noteworthy achievement, particularly for women in the media.

According to her, the development further demonstrates the growing recognition of women’s capacity to contribute meaningfully and provide effective leadership in different sectors of society.

“I am particularly pleased and proud to see a woman emerge to lead the Correspondents’ Chapel. Recently, I celebrated the emergence of another woman as Chairman of the NUJ. Their achievement goes beyond their personal accomplishment; it sends a powerful message to young women that they can aspire to leadership, develop their abilities, and make a difference wherever they find themselves.

“Mrs Gwani is a worthy example to young women coming up, demonstrating that with determination, professionalism, integrity and dedication, women can rise to positions of responsibility and make meaningful contributions to society,” she said.

The Deputy Governor urged the newly elected Chairman to approach the responsibility with a strong sense of duty, humility and fairness, stressing that leadership of a professional body requires inclusiveness, accountability and the ability to unite people around shared objectives.

She encouraged the new chairman to use her tenure to further promote high professional standards, ethical journalism, responsible reporting and capacity development among members of the Chapel, while fostering greater cooperation and solidarity within the profession.

The Deputy Governor further acknowledged the important role of the media in strengthening democracy, noting that journalists have a responsibility to provide credible information, promote accountability, give voice to issues affecting society and contribute to peace and sustainable development.

She also commended members of the Correspondents’ Chapel for their confidence in Mrs. Gwani and expressed the hope that the new executive would work together to advance the welfare of members and contribute to the continued growth and professionalism of journalism in Plateau State.

The Deputy Governor called on the new leadership to maintain a constructive relationship with government, institutions and other stakeholders, noting that a vibrant, professional and responsible media remains an important partner in the development of Plateau State.
