PLATEAU RERUN: LALONG AND THE GENERATIONAL SHIFT
The history of Plateau State and most of its successes is built around young and visionary leaders. It was no mistake therefore that God made it possible for the late Commissioner of Police, Joseph Dechi Gomwalk to, at a young age, set the foundation for the development of Benue - Plateau state as Military Administrator.
His memories have left indelible marks in the hearts of people of the then Benue- Plateau State and others because of his vision and inclusive governance. Others have come to govern Plateau state with a sense of equity , fairness and justice. This is in the sharing of political offices & projects across the state, giving all parts of the State a sense of belonging.
This unwritten bond had fostered the unity of the state until attempt in 2015 to set the hands of the clock backward by Lalong’s predecessor. In what became the voice of God,the people rejected the move overwhelmingly, saying no to divisive politics and injury to their sensibilities by voting Governor Simon Lalong and the APC.
Coming in at a much younger age than his predecessor, Lalong recalibrated the state's socio- political and economic dynamics by running an inclusive government and a people-centred administration. As a young and dynamic leader,he broke barriers of ethnicity and religion, which relaunched the state as a new bride with many suitors. People are now rushing to the state for social and economic activities because of the peace ambience created. The youthful and energetic Lalong is always alert to the yearnings and aspirations of citizens and goes the extra mile to attract good will and projects to the state.
The future of a people lies in its youth. That perhaps explains Lalong's investment in education, youth & women entrepreneurship while not neglecting other sectors. For instance, the state's citadel of learning, Plateau State University, Bokkos, among other educational institutions, has bounced back to life from the needless suffocation it suffered under the last administration.
Plateau Youth now have a voice through the resuscitation of the state Youth Council which was held down by the previous government. In the run up to to the 2019 elections, Governor Lalong interfaced with people of the state and different interest groups.
He has promised to involve more youth and women in the governance process as part of deliberate mentorship for future roles in the social, economic and political well being of the state. Indeed, Lalong did keep most of the 2015 election promises and these too he will uphold.
Lalong is the first Governor of the state to embark on a radical creation of an entrepreneurial base for Youth. A testimony of this is the emergence of Jerry Mallo a Plateau youth as first winner of Nigeria's MSME program. Many more youth across the length and breath of the state are not just creating wealth but are now employers of labour.
On March 9,2019,Plateau people overwhelmingly gave Lalong a second mandate dusting his aged co-contestant but the electoral umpire delayed the victory dance with what it called "inconclusive" poll. The people have spoken and they will tomorrow, Saturday, 23rd March, 2019 reinforce their choice in a generational shift by Voting Lalong Again in the rerun in the about 40 polling units in parts of the state to put "inconclusive" to shame.
Inconclusive has given the main opposition PDP candidate, Jeremiah Useni, a false sense of hope. Perhaps, those who want to gain pecuniary benefits from him are driving him on on a fruitless journey. From the content of his recent speeches, it is very obvious that he has already been hoodwinked by those who want to rip him off, particularly the lawyers among them, to head to the election tribunal, knowing very well that Lalong’s victory in the rerun election is a fait accompli!
