-----Receives delegations from EU, search for common ground

The Plateau State House of Assembly has opened a new chapter of collaboration with the Chairmen of the Seventeen Local Government Councils.

The goal is to work together across political divides to tackle insecurity and protect the lives and property of Plateau citizens.

This consensus followed a strategic engagement held at the instance of the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel Gapyil, after a resolution was passed on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, inviting the Council Chairmen to interface with the Legislature as a vital step toward addressing the recurring killings of innocent citizens across the state.

At the meeting, both sides agreed to set aside party lines and focus on good governance, particularly, in the area of security. They recognized that the safety of lives and property is a shared mandate that requires unified  decisive action.

The Speaker emphasized that both the Assembly and the Council Chairmen are accountable to the people of Plateau State, and must therefore align with the peace-driven vision of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, which promotes security, harmony, and inclusive governance.

Speaking on behalf of the Council Chairmen, Chairman of Jos South Local Government Council, Hon. Patrick Dung, applauded the Speaker and Members of the Assembly for initiating the dialogue.

He described it as a thoughtful and timely move that will deepen institutional cooperation and enhance governance at all levels.

Both parties unequivocally condemned the recent wave of attacks on innocent citizens and resolved to work together in ensuring that such acts are brought to an end.

In a related development, the Speaker also received a delegation from Search for Common Ground, led by its Acting Country Director, Gift Omoniwa, along with a representative of the European Union, Reuben Alba Aguilera.

The delegation praised the Legislature’s proactive engagement in matters of security and peacebuilding, and expressed interest in forging closer ties with the House.

Omoniwa highlighted their ongoing work in Plateau State, including community peace initiatives involving youths, women, and interfaith leaders efforts which, she said, have yielded encouraging results.

Responding, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naalong Daniel Gapyil, commended the organization and its partners for their contributions in the areas of peacebuilding, education, healthcare, and social development.

He assured them of the unwavering support of the 10th Assembly in all collaborative efforts that will advance the common good of the society.
