The Butura Traditional Council of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, has assured the management team of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, led by Professor Shedrack Best, of its full support and cooperation. The University is domiciled on Butura land.
Led by the Paramount Ruler of Butura Land and Chairman of the Butura Traditional Council,Engineer Dr. John Mallo Makwal, the Joint Traditional Council reaffirmed its strong commitment to continued collaboration for the growth of both the University and the Butura nation.
In a renewed show of partnership and solidarity, the Butura nation, led by the District Head and Chairman of the Butura Joint Traditional Council, Engineer Dr. John Mallo, along with elders of the land, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor Professor Shedrack Gaya Best in his office,the first of its kind since the University’s establishment.
Speaking during the visit, the monarch said the delegation came to identify with the mission and progress of the University. He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shedrack Best, for transforming PLASU to greater heights through rapid growth and visible achievements, both in quality and standard.
> “We came to register our support to you,” he said. “This is the first time we are doing this, considering the remarkable development PLASU has achieved. We will do everything possible to ensure that the dream of our fathers, who donated the land free of charge, is realised.”
The Royal Father, Engineer Makwal then introduced the newly established PLASU Liaison Committee, tasked with serving as a bridge between the host community and the University.
“The committee should be engaged, especially in the plans to transform PLASU into an urban area, which will require consultations. Please work with them on all issues related to land and other development matters,” he advised.
In his remark, the visibly elated Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shedrack Gaya Best, expressed delight over the visit, noting that the gesture would not be taken for granted. “Your visit means a lot to us. It strengthens us as management".
He reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with stakeholders to advance the University’s mission, describing the creation of the Butura Liaison Committee as timely, especially as the University expands its programmes.
> “With the new programmes recently approved by the NUC, our current land area will not be enough. We will work with the committee to ensure mutual understanding,”.
The Vice-Chancellor further announced that the University, through its Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, will soon begin dairy production and expand its poultry farm to serve as a practical training centre. Additionally, the University has obtained a licence from the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to establish a campus Radio station, which will create opportunities to broadcast news in the Butura language and showcase Butura culture and traditions as part of the University's corporate social responsibility.
The strong support for the University’s growth and the development of the Butura community was affirmed through contributions from key leaders, including the President of the Butura Development Association, Dr. Ezekiel Macham, the elder statesman and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Samuel Mafuyei, and former Member of the House of Representatives, James Ayuba.
