The Federal government of Nigeria has ordered all universities to reopen with the effect from 18th of January 2021.

The National University Commission (NUC), has instructed the Vice-chancellors of all universities in the country to resume academic activities from the 18th of January. This instruction is in compliance of the principles of the presidential task force on covid19.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has been on strike for more than ten months. This strike was called off on the 23rd of December 2020 after a meeting that was held by ASUU members with the federal government at Abuja. The meeting was addressed by ASUU National president, Prof Abiodun Ogunyemi.

All universities are hereby instructed to open. Therefore all the staff members of the versities are to commence full duty as soon as the institutions reopen.

However the National University Commission has given an order for all officers from level 12 and below to stay at home and not resume duty until a further instruction will be given. Their duty can be carried out from home, online.

Furthermore the presidential task force on covid19 has ordered all members of staff and students to adhere strictly to the principles on covid19. The use of the hand sanitizer must be observed, the use of face mask, the avoidance of hand-shake, and there must be regular washing of the hands. Any sign or symptoms of COVID19 must be reported immediately to the health department of the university.

All lecturers are compelled to fully resume intensive classes with students so as to cover the syllabus of the semesters.
